Why visit?
Vogelpark Avifauna has been one of Alphen aan den Rijn's best-known attractions since 1950. It began as the world's first bird park and developed into a varied zoo with more than two hundred animal species. Birds remain central, alongside animals including red pandas, lemurs, meerkats and giant anteaters.
What makes a visit distinctive?
Avifauna combines animal habitats with green walking routes and areas where visitors walk among animals. Its large playground makes the park especially strong for families with young children. Allow roughly three to five hours for the animal park alone; with extended play, food and breaks, it can easily fill a day.
Tickets and travel
A dated online ticket costs €22 from age three in 2026; gate and flexible online tickets cost €23. Children aged two and under enter free. Eligible residents of Alphen municipality and listed villages can buy the €15 local ticket at the gate with proof of address. Parking costs €7.50 per car per day. Bus 2 stops almost outside the entrance, while cycling from the centre takes roughly ten to fifteen minutes.
Accessibility
Avifauna states that, apart from some uneven stretches, the nature park is accessible by wheelchair or walker. Accessible toilets are available in the restaurants and the bird demonstration has wheelchair spaces. Loan chairs at the entrance cannot be reserved. Recognised assistance dogs are allowed, with cautions around walk-through animal areas.
A critical note
The large visitor sample is mostly positive, but recent reviews are not uniformly enthusiastic. Some mention overgrown sections that reduce animal visibility, worn or poorly maintained seating, untidy food areas and a high total cost. Expect a green, historic animal park rather than a polished modern theme park.
Events policy
Daily feeding moments, demonstrations, playground hours and meet-and-greets are not added as individual Tourist Guide Alphen events. Only major themed days or evening openings with a separate, confirmed future date qualify.
