Zegerplas lake
Walk Alphen's well-known lake circuit and combine water, nature, small beaches, sport and nearby hospitality in Park Zegersloot.
Why visit?
Zegerplas is the large blue centrepiece of Park Zegersloot and one of Alphen aan den Rijn's best-known outdoor attractions. This former sand-extraction lake covers around 70 hectares and is surrounded by walking paths, green shores, sport, recreation and hospitality.
Walk the lake circuit
The easiest introduction is the local ‘Rondje Meer’, a circuit of roughly 4.3 kilometres. Allow around one to one and a half hours without long breaks. Views change from open water and recreational shores to quieter green sections. On the northern side, the lake connects with Park Zegersloot's natural landscape and Prinses Irenebos.
Beach, swimming and water
Recreation and designated swimming sections include Speelvijver near Sportlaan and the southern shore near De Bijlen. Zegerplas is nevertheless a very deep former sand pit: around 18 metres deep on average and more than 30 metres in places. Check the latest location notice on Zwemwater.nl before every swim. Conditions can change, including because of blue-green algae; actively supervise children and do not swim beyond your ability.
What else can you do?
The area is also used for running, cycling, windsurfing, paddleboarding, sailing and other outdoor sports. Some activities require your own equipment, membership or a provider. Sports venues and hospitality around the lake make it easy to extend the circuit with lunch, drinks or another activity.
Access and planning
Zegerplas has several access points around Burgemeester Bruins Slotsingel, Sportlaan and De Bijlen. Decide which shore you need before travelling. Almost any starting point works for the full circuit, while families and swimmers should navigate directly to their selected recreation shore. Facilities differ around the lake, so consult the official park map as well.
