Alphen aan den Rijn
Taste of the Four Ambachten: a 22.9 km cycle route
A relaxed circular ride from Zegerplas through Ter Aar, Langeraar and Woubrugge, combining polders, farms, water and local produce.
Taste of the Four Ambachten is an accessible circular ride for visitors who want to experience the countryside around Alphen without immediately committing to forty or fifty kilometres. The 22.9-kilometre route starts near Zegerplas and passes through Ter Aar, Langeraar and Woubrugge. Expect polders, waterways, village ribbons, farms and opportunities to buy cheese, vegetables or other regional produce.
Why the Four Ambachten?
The name refers to the Vierambachtspolder area. The official route page describes it as an old reclamation formed from nine separate polders. Water management, farming and long narrow plots still define the scenery, creating a rural atmosphere while keeping villages relatively close together.
Who will enjoy the ride?
The loop suits leisure cyclists, couples, families with older children and e-bike users. The distance is manageable, but the stops create most of its character. Allow three to four hours when you want to browse a farm stall, buy cheese and take a café break.
Route outline
- Zegerplas start: depart from the parking area at Burgemeester Bruins Slotsingel 9. Check the GPX file or junction sequence before leaving.
- Towards Ter Aar: the first kilometres move from Alphen into open polder and waterside scenery. Expect residents and agricultural traffic on narrower roads.
- Paradijsweg and Langeraar: this area is known for small rural sales points. Products and opening times vary by day and season.
- Woubrugge: the waterside village is a logical coffee or lunch stop. The official route mentions several venues, but always check their current opening hours.
- Return to Zegerplas: junction signs and polder roads lead back to the starting point.
Cycle junctions
The published sequence is 20–17–16–15–14–44–33–34–79–35–36–42–16–17–20. Networks may change during maintenance or roadworks. Download the current GPX file and follow temporary diversion signs whenever they differ from the normal sequence.
Planning local-produce stops
Bring panniers, but do not make the whole ride depend on one small stall unless its opening is confirmed. Some stands are unattended and use cash or QR payment; farm shops may have short fixed hours. Select one or two priority stops and treat anything else as a welcome extra.
Safety and comfort
The main route uses surfaced roads and cycle paths. Narrow polder roads are shared with walkers, cars and agricultural vehicles. Ride in single file where appropriate and slow down in villages. Exposed sections provide little shelter, so a headwind can noticeably increase the return time.
A balanced half-day
Begin with coffee near Zegerplas, choose one local-produce stop and plan lunch in Woubrugge or after returning to Alphen. This keeps the ride relaxed and leaves enough time to enjoy the landscape rather than simply collecting junction numbers.
